If you followed the weather forecasts, you knew that for this launch it was going to rain, thunder & lightning, flood, fog, snow, locusts and whatever else they were predicting. But if you showed up to the field like Poohbah said, you saw a great day for flying. The mostly cloudy, but totally dry, sky made for not so hot temps and a fairly light wind. It turned out to be a really nice day to fly. I guess Donald’s “Storm Chaser” chased the weather away.
Engine totals:
5 – 1/2A Engines
8 – A Engines
15 – B Engines
19 – C Engines
9 – D Engines
7 – E Engines
6 – F Engines
2 – G Engines
Total of 71 engines on 69 flights.
There wasn’t a ton of people, but we did see a bunch of new faces. Welcome all! Some are new to the hobby, and some came with some nice rockets, but everyone had a nice afternoon.
Michael flew his “Blue Beam Jr” (aka “Space Shuttle”) a number of times and it mostly flew very well with a gliding Shuttle recovery (its last flight was a little rough). Brian C cooked up his “Big Betty Crocker”, “Photon Probe”, “Photon 2”, “Booster 1” and other interesting rockets from his little shop of rockets. Donald flew an egg repeatedly, until it got scrambled, then he switched to “Birdies”, “Mean Machine” and other less weighty objects. Joe K. launched his Van Halen inspired paint job on his “Prowler” that flew as well as it looked (if you remember the ‘80’s). Eric flew his new “Starship” for the first time, and it mostly survived. Eric also flew a 3-engine cluster on his “Titan Flex” rocket, just to prove that our system CAN handle clusters. That was soon followed by a much better looking, and more accurate “Titan III E” from Mark, who had a number of nice-looking rockets flying. Brian also flew his “Lots of Delicious Recycled Snacks” aka “Pringles”, which had a new and improved fin arrangement. If he keeps building these things he will need a lot of Alka Seltzer tablets! Brian and Eric also flew a drag race of their “Nike-X” rockets. While Brian’s was much larger, Eric’s was much faster off the pad. In fact, it was on the way down by the time Brian’s was finally going up! But Brian’s G-77 Redline motor was very cool to see. Manav also showed up a little later in the afternoon, but he had nice “Great Goblin” flight to cap off the day. Finally, Diptanshu’s ARC team, “Mach Light Speed” was flying and gathering data and experience. That’s how you do that contest!
Sadly, there was a great loss in our CENJARS fleet. Jimmy’s “Mega Mosquito” Franken-rocket finally got claimed by the trees. But don’t count that thing out yet. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if we find it flying again next month (with yet a few more repairs).
Found on the field was a Hello Kitty “Sky Dragon” doll. Could this have been a lost bit of cargo from someone’s rocket? See CENJARS Secretary Eric to claim it next launch.
Joe K. from Rocketship Games was again on the field with his great selection of kits and motors. Joe should be there in October, so if you need anything, let him know ahead of time and he’ll bring it to the field.
Pictures are in the Gallery. Please add to it if you have anything good to share.
On our calendar is Kid’s Day America in Wall, just around the corner from the field we fly at. This event, on Saturday, Sept. 21st, is always fun, and a little way for us to give back to the local community. We fly demo launches on the front lawn (which is very small) of the Wall municipal building. We also display some larger rockets (whatever you want to bring and show off) and teach folks a little about our hobby. This is a fun time and gives you a chance to fly a lot of probes and odd little rockets in one day, plus meet some nice folks. Feel free to come help us out if you can make it.
Next launch is October 6th. Maybe it’s the Halloween season. Maybe someone is just looking on the bright side of life. A few folks will be celebrating the movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Expect knights of the round table to be on the field. Perhaps a few other interesting happenings. If you are not familiar with the movie, or it has been awhile, give it a viewing just so you are a little more in tune with whatever surprises the gang cook up. But regardless – dress as your favorite knight or character from the movie. And if that’s not your thing, come dressed in whatever your Halloween heart desires! Fly your goblins, pumpkins, bats, and Candy Corn (😲). It’ll be a blast, I’m sure!!!!
