October 2024 Launch Report

Well, it was a very nice and pretty fall day. Temps were fairly warm for October. The only disappointment was that there was a significant wind to contend with, but all-in-all, we were able to handle it and make a lot of nice flights.

Engine totals:
5 – 1/2A Engines
13 – A Engines
30 – B Engines
17 – C Engines
8 – D Engines
7 – E Engines
10 – F Engines
2 – G Engines
Total of 92 engines on 89 flights.

A nice crowd was on hand, including a bunch of new folks. Welcome all, young and old! We started a little early, hoping to get as much flying in as possible. Thanks to Neil for getting the gear to the field and getting the set up going (not to mention some great bagels).

So we had a theme of “Halloween” for this launch. A sub-theme of that was “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” Halloween being the perfect opportunity for dressing up as Knights of the Round Table and acting silly. And of course, Joe “Cecil B. DeZielinsky” was on hand to make a documentary of the whole event. Looking forward to that video, Which should be posted soon. Aside from dressed up knights, we had a Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog, a flying cow, THE Holy Grail, a flying Hand Granade of Antioch, and a flying Excalibur sword. And let’s not forget the cans of Spam! Thanks to those who took part, and apologies to those who didn’t know what the heck was going on. Either way, good fun was had.

In addition to Monty Python, there was plenty of other Halloween related flying. Numerous versions of pumpkin rockets “flew”. Some better than others. And a few got “squashed” on landing. There were a bunch of Goblins of various sizes and colors. And some ghosts, skeletons, and Zombie rockets too. And not just limited to costumed knights, a couple of clowns, and a human powered Rocketship were in attendance as well.

Other flights of note included Linden’s 2-stage Lawn Dart, which flew a couple of times with great success. Michael flew various “Blue Beam” rockets, some of which look a lot like the Space Shuttle. There was a Quinstar drag race that was fun (congrats to Joe’s first up). A flying Port-a-John, Coffee cups, a couple of Mosquito’s, Brian’s 2-stage spool, among others. If you got there early, you saw Neil’s Striker that came down with a striking custom Shark parachute. If you stayed to nearly the end, you saw Neil’s Red Baron Glider fly up well, but sadly not glide very gently into the ground. That one’s gonna need a little paint. Maybe a spot of glue.

You should also have seen Diptanshu and team Mach Lightspeed putting up a number of flights for their ARC competition. They seem to be off to a great start for this year’s competition. We expect to start seeing more teams showing up to get their flight data and experience by the April deadline. We’ll monitor things and make sure they fly in as orderly a way as possible.

Joe K. from Rocketship Games was again on the field with his great selection of kits and motors. Joe should be there in November as well. Did you check out his old, out of print Quest kits? Some interesting ones in there that were very tempting.

Pictures are in the Gallery. Please add to it if you have anything good to share.

Next launch is November 3rd. Let’s hope we have nice weather once again, otherwise the whole launch could turn out to be a real turkey.
